Sports Clubs
You’ll be able to follow your passion for pretty much any sport you choose when you live here. Most sporting facilities are available right here in the Eastern Bay.
As in most places in New Zealand, rugby union and rugby league play major roles in the sporting community. There are clubs and grounds all over the region, with Whakatane regularly hosting the region’s first grade union team, the Steamers. Don’t feel that this is a sport only for the boys, women’s rugby union enjoys a healthy following here.
The traditional sister to rugby, netball is also a very well followed sport in the region. We have fed a number of players into the national competition and there are many excellent facilities throughout the region, with Whakatane having a major complex of courts.
If you want to improve your golf handicap in some beautiful surroundings then we have some delights for you. There are a number of golf clubs in the region including some challenging courses located in beautiful coastal surroundings.
We have a very strong soccer community in the Eastern Bay, with a number of clubs operating and a strong youth element to the game. The large number of international immigrants to the Eastern Bay have ensured that this sport enjoys a stronger following here than in many other areas of New Zealand.
The list really does go on when it comes to sport; squash, hockey, gymnastics, bowls and on and on. We are an active community and we would like nothing better than to test your skills or just have a social game or two.
